Espace explores an imaginary architecture where plans, volumes, and colors assemble into an organic construction that evokes both the city and the mind ; a place where ideas shift, develop and take form.

Démarche - Process

La série Espace, autrefois intitulée Architecture, explore la construction du territoire à travers une forme centrale géométrique qui se déploie comme une ville en transformation. Cette forme, composée d’éléments évoquant escaliers, passages, volumes et façades, se développe de manière organique : elle grandit, se module, se creuse et s’articule selon ses propres besoins, à l’image d’un milieu urbain vivant. Chaque œuvre devient ainsi un territoire en devenir, un espace où le regard circule comme celui d’un marcheur qui traverse la ville et s’y crée ses propres repères.

L’esthétique de la série emprunte au langage architectural ( plans, perspectives, structures verticales et horizontales ) pour proposer une expérience du lieu qui oscille entre l’extérieur et l’intime. La forme se détache d’un fond en aplat et construit son autonomie : des zones restent ouvertes, légères ou transparentes, tandis que d’autres se densifient, s’approfondissent et s’architecturent. Cette dynamique entre le vide et le construit révèle une pensée du territoire comme espace mouvant, divisé, recomposé, toujours en quête de son organisation finale.

La série prend naissance en 2012, alors que la suspension temporaire de Surface, fortement associée au carré rouge du Printemps érable, ouvre paradoxalement une nouvelle voie créative. En cherchant à étirer, creuser et faire éclater la forme du carré ( surtout rouge à cette époque ) je découvre des volumes, des passages, des coupes, des rythmes. Cette exploration deviendra le socle de Espace, une série où l’architecture n’est pas représentée, mais réinventée.

Au fil des années, Espace intègre des références à des plans d’architecture réels issus de lieux publics par exemple des gares, bibliothèques, salles de spectacle . Des espaces où l’humain se rassemble et où ses comportements prennent forme. La série s’enrichit également d’œuvres découpées sur bois, dessinées et peintes par moi et réalisées en collaboration avec mon père. Ces pièces, qui évoquent une architecture de l’héritage, tissent un lien intime entre transmission, mémoire et construction du territoire.

Aujourd’hui, Espace poursuit cette exploration d’un territoire en évolution constante : une architecture imaginaire qui naît, s’organise, se fragmente et se reconstruit. Un espace où la géométrie, la couleur et l’esprit composent une ville intérieure en perpétuelle transformation. Un espace d’échange qui institue un territoire de dialogue affranchi des tensions symboliques.

The Espace series, formerly titled Architecture, explores the construction of territory through a central geometric form that unfolds like a city in transformation. Made of elements that evoke staircases, passages, volumes, and façades, this form develops organically, growing, shifting, hollowing out, and reorganizing itself according to its own internal logic ( much like a living urban environment. Each work thus becomes a territory in the making, a space through which the viewer’s gaze moves as a walker would navigate a city, inventing their own points of orientation.

The aesthetic of the series draws from architectural language ( plans, perspectives, vertical and horizontal structures ) to offer an experience of place that oscillates between exteriority and intimacy. The form detaches itself from a flat background and builds its own autonomy: some areas remain open, light, or transparent, while others densify, deepen, and become architected. This interplay between the empty and the constructed reveals a vision of territory as a shifting space, divided, recomposed, and continually searching for its final organization.

The series emerged in 2012, when the temporary suspension of Surface, strongly associated with the red square of the Maple Spring movement, unexpectedly opened a new creative path. By stretching, fragmenting, and expanding the square ( predominantly red at the time ) I uncovered volumes, passages, cuts, and rhythms. This exploration became the foundation of Espace, a series in which architecture is not depicted but reimagined.

Over the years, Espace has incorporated references to architectural plans taken from public places per example train stations, libraries, performance halls. The spaces where people gather and where behavior shapes itself. The series also includes wood cut-out works, designed by me and crafted in collaboration with my father. These pieces, which evoke an architecture of heritage, weave an intimate link between transmission, memory, and the construction of territory.

Today, Espace continues to explore a territory in perpetual evolution: an imaginary architecture that forms, reorganizes, fragments, and rebuilds. A space where geometry, color, and thought compose an inner city in constant transformation. A space of exchange that establishes a site of dialogue liberated from symbolic tensions.
